You get the 3d base template which you can rotate around to fill in the pixels, a color wheel, and other essential tools to draw and paint your character as you wish. Choose between the classic or slim version and start drawing away! Super Mario Maker is a good game and an excellent creation tool, combining the imagination of something like LittleBigPlanet with the brilliant platforming of the Mario games.Skindex’s Skin Editor could be one of the most popular Minecraft skin editors available online today as an accessible and convenient tool for players. And if that seems like too much effort, you can always just pick through the levels of the top creators. You have to pick through a lot of these if you want to come across a hidden gem, but it all feels worth it when you find them. Whether Super Mario Maker is a gateway to infinite Mario levels or an outlet for your creativity, you will still find unlimited value within. There's much more stuff that's average or just not very good than there are essential levels. We suppose you could always leave a comment on their level to say how much you dislike them.Īs with anything that relies on user-generated content, Super Mario Maker's biggest issue is its inconsistency. We did feel a pang of sadness whenever we skipped a level, though, as part of Super Mario Maker's genius is that you can only upload a level if you first complete it yourself - you know the creator has done it, so it's not impossible. It's as accessible or hardcore as you want it to be. This means the game is only ever as frustrating as you want it to be. If you come across a level that's too difficult you can just hold a button to skip it and a new level will be shuffled in. You can also try your luck on courses built by the developers - including remixes of some classic levels - in the 10 Mario Challenge. This mode lets you choose the difficulty - presumably this is based on the percentage of players who make it through your level - and hop into a random playlist of levels until you get to the end of the course or run out of your 100 lives. The best ideas sit comfortably at the top of the pile, but there is also a clever way for players to stumble across hidden gems by playing the 100 Mario Challenge. Players are able to search or choose from a list of the most popular creations, or perhaps the newest. Somebody even had a go at making a side-scrolling shooter.įinding these levels is simple. One level paid homage to Flappy Bird, guiding Mario between staggered pipes while keeping him afloat with button taps in the water. The thing is, we're sure someone else will have a similar idea and do it justice once Super Mario Maker is in the wild. The potential was there, but we never got round to finishing it. Perhaps you'd go through a nearby pipe and slip underneath them like it was an air vent. The idea was to create an intricate level with multiple options, using the small bit of verticality the game allows to give the player multiple choices: a spring that you could move into place to take the high ground, or a fire flower to fight your way through the low road that's blocked off by a full row of Koopas in a tight corridor. The tools don't allow quite as much freedom as something like LittleBigPlanet, but they're much easier to use. Instead we went straight onto our next creation - 'Basically Deus Ex'. We reckon if we went back in and added a chasing screen it would liven things up. One of the levels we did publish was called 'Basically Not Very Good', because it was terrible - it was flat and lacked danger or urgency. We have loads of them sitting there, half finished and unpublished.
